We liked the Kodak, it installed fine but when I went to print it gave the the "communication not available" error. We thought it was the printer, so we returned it and got a Lexmark, did the same thing as the Kodak. Installed fine and then when we went to print "communication not available" error.
I called Dell and they were going to charge me a "nominal fee" to help me fix the problem. Instead, I went a bought a Dell printer, thinking that would fix the problem, but alas no. The printer installed fine, but when I go to print it gives me the same message, "communication not available" and the printer is connected via USB cable. First, make sure you computer has all the Windows Updates. I have the custom ines, too, especially. Also make sure to have the latest Java.
Try re-installing the printer following the instructions below and then report back what happens. XP Drivers. Vista bit Drivers. All other drivers. Go to device manager right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager.
Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power. I did all that and still the same message of "communication not available". I keep trying to get a hold of Dell but they have been "busy" all day, and last week Usually when I get a person that cannot install a printer, the operating system usually needs repaired.
It really easy to do. Make backup copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose. This should be a normal practice. Also get the latest java. Hmm seems to be a trend. I have the same with my new vista dell system.
Dell tech support wants to charge to look at it even tho the system is less than 2 mts old.. Thats just wrong. I'm having the same problem as BOTH of you However, this is quite a complex and time-consuming process — especially if you are doing it for the first time. Moreover, installing the wrong driver or making mistakes along the way can lead to even more problems and glitches with your system.
Thus, it is strongly recommended that you use a specialized driver-updating software tool like Auslogics Driver Updater to do the task for you. The program will locate driver issues and update your existing drivers with just one click. You can, thus, use it to install a new printer driver for your PC while saving yourself the time and potentially more trouble associated with a manual installation.
Moreover, once installed on your PC, Auslogics Driver Updater will detect driver issues early on and help you avoid new errors. Auslogics Driver Updater diagnoses driver issues and lets you update old drivers all at once or one at a time to get your PC running smoother.
Finally, we recommend that you have a reliable anti-malware program installed on your PC — like Auslogics Anti-Malware. If you are using an older Lexmark driver and a new HP driver there could be a conflict between them.
Yeah, that's exactly why I'm confused. I don't know that much about computers, but I can usually get around problems like this.
The odd thing is that Vista recognizes my printer! The Lexmark programs show up and everything when I'm going to print, but it doesn't actually print. Edit: Sorry, I wrote it in a rush so it might be confusing.
I'm trying to hook up the old Lexmark printer to my new, Vista laptop the HP printer is hooked up to another comp. So, the printers are in no way connected to each other. Hope that clarifies things. I have a feeling that maybe it isn't compatible with Vista, but at the same time, I've used it before, though not thru USB. Did the Lexmark drivers you installed come from Windows Vista or the disc that came with the printer?
I tried both. I didn't put the disc in the first time, and I guess Vista just searched for it and installed. When that didn't work, I tried installing the printer drivers from the disc. Both times the results were the same: the programs work on my computer, my laptop recognized the printer, it was on the printer list etc, but I still can't print OR scan at all.
If Windows Vista found a driver itself then like my first post said it should have worked. I don't really know what to do about that. For an older driver you can try running a program as Administrator and see if printing works then. Just right click on a program shortcut and click "Run As Administrator". Also do that with notepad. The option doesn't appear for Microsoft Office shortcuts for some reason.
I tried it on WordPad, and nothing happened. The Print dialog box came up but that was it. Not even the printer notifier thing? When I use it with Notepad, after the Print dialog box, another error message comes up. It says "The handle is invalid.
Download the driver by yourself from internet, that way you can make sure its vista compatible and be sure it is set as the "default printer that may fix many problems with all in one printers, you could also make sure you have some "imaging center" on or some kind of software that installs itself with the printer and helps control it i your printer has any.
If the driver is not vista compatible vista wont be able to do anything from it no matter if the computer says "correctly installed" I had the same from a Lexmark z25 printer about 4 months ago, ended up disabling it and leaving it for my sister's XP machine. How does this work? Basically, the new line doesn't include a carriage return, so our output just flows off the page.
So when you print a 10 line document, you may only see one line, as the rest was printed outside of the margin. Advanced printing topics.
